Truth be told, there are some people who will never be satisfied no matter how well a product or service meets their expectations. Yet without customers, including the always-dissatisfied ones, you would not have a business.

There Is A Difference

Despite the fact that some customers will be difficult, there are times when the customer has a legitimate complaint which needs to be addressed because the company made an error. Any error, large or small, warrants a complaint because a customer has the right to expect to get what he or she bought. If the error is one in which a customer was not treated properly by a sales or customer service representative, the attitude must be one of the customer is always right – even when they are wrong.

The all-important first step is the mea culpa – admitting a mistake was made. This will go a long way in appeasing the customer and moving forward to resolving the problem. One of the biggest concerns for a business owner is how much it will cost to fix the problem. That is not the customer’s concern and should not be an issue during any point in the conversation.

Excuses Not Welcome

Moving forward is important too, and often movement in that direction gets stalled because the company begins to make excuses as to why there is a problem. Two things go through the mind of the customer when an excuse is offered. The first is that the excuse is an admission of guilt. The second is that the customer does not really care about why it happened. The only the parts they care about are that a mistake was made and that they expect restitution.

Admitting the problem is the company’s fault shows the customer that they are dealing with a company that is responsive and accountable. Most people prefer doing business with a place with which they can be assured their voices will be heard and the people who run the business stand behind their work. Making excuses will likely never buy you this kind of goodwill.

Be Willing To Take A Loss

Being open to taking a loss on a product for the purpose of providing a higher-quality service and resolving a customer complaint leaves you many options. This applies only to major mistakes such as significant design flaws or safety issues. Just because you can meet the lowest regulatory standard of safety or quality does not mean you should. Consider the number of Toyota automobiles that received negative press about their safety over the last few years. Whether they were aware of the problems or not, the connection between Toyota and safety will be a negative one in the minds of many potential consumers for some time. Ask yourself if losing current and future sales because the known issue was ignored for the sake of short-term profit is the best way to do business.

The mindset of dealing with mistakes is primarily about a long-term perspective of business. Establishing a growing number of customers who trust and believe in your brand  takes time. A short-term loss can be converted into a long term gain if handled properly. Businesses owe their profitability to customers. Making sure their needs are met and that their satisfaction is a priority will keep them coming back.

Amazon Moving Your Merchandise with Robots http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/20/amazon-moving-your-merchandise-with-robots/ http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/20/amazon-moving-your-merchandise-with-robots/#comments Tue, 20 Jan 2015 16:00:00 +0000 http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/20/amazon-moving-your-merchandise-with-robots/ Amazon is not known for sharing great details about its device sales or customers but one thing is definitely clear – Amazon ...]]> solutions-upper-mockAmazon is not known for sharing great details about its device sales or customers but one thing is definitely clear – Amazon sells and ships a lot of packages. They ship so many packages that recently they have been able to grow and raise the free shipping threshold to $35. Amazon’s shipping business and other services have grown so much that the company announced that its revenues reached an impressive $17.09 billion and are up 24% over last year. Clearly, Amazon is doing something right.

With all these sales comes the need to find better ways to move merchandise through their various warehouses around the country. In addition to an impressive army of human employees, Amazon has been experimenting with various automated delivery systems such as drones designed to reduce shipping times, and has also recently announced the use of robots in their warehouses. These robots are called Kiva robots, and they’re designed to move product and assist employees with unloading and loading of goods.

Kiva Robots

With the announcement of their latest earnings, Amazon also made the interesting announcement that they will be employing 1,382 Kiva robots in three of their fulfillment centers. The company that created these handy little robots was scooped up by Amazon just last year and it seems they are now trying to cash in on that investment as they deploy these small robots to help them fulfill orders much faster. The small robots move stacks of merchandise around their fulfillment centers with ease, allowing the human employees they are assisting to focus on other tasks so your orders are filled more quickly.

What About Large Packages?

While the Kiva robots are quite useful for the movement of smaller merchandise, Amazon also ships and handles a great deal of larger products as well that simply cannot be moved with the smaller robots. In order to assist its employees with the larger products, Amazon has deployed Robo-Stow arms to help them move these larger products through the warehouses with relative ease.

Record Breaking Unload Times

When one of the larger trailers full of merchandise comes in, it would normally take humans hours to unload and route these products where they need to go. In order to improve this time, the company has deployed new vision-based systems that assist employees with the process reducing the time from hours to a mere thirty minutes.

While only deployed at three of its fulfillment centers around the country, experts believe this is just a test of their effectiveness and if they are successful, Amazon is expected to roll out more and more of these robots around the country as it continues to work on decreasing shipping times on all of its orders. Humans continue to play an important role at Amazon and the company continues to hire impressive numbers of workers each year. This trend isn’t likely to change in the near future as the robots currently aren’t designed to replace the need for humans in their warehouses. They are there to simply assist the workers with their orders as the company speeds up delivery even under the busiest of shipping seasons.

How Money Management is Changing http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/19/how-money-management-is-changing/ http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/19/how-money-management-is-changing/#comments Mon, 19 Jan 2015 16:00:00 +0000 http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/19/how-money-management-is-changing/ Money management, from the consumer viewpoint, will be undergoing significant changes over the next few years. An important part of this change ...]]> executive-510513_640Money management, from the consumer viewpoint, will be undergoing significant changes over the next few years. An important part of this change will be in the area of personal information security and customer convenience. Biometrics, a technology that involves things such as fingerprint and retinal identification, will become increasingly-common methods for accessing account information and conducting basic banking activities.

This is evident in some sectors of business already: fingerprint identification is used in conducting sales transactions and wearable devices are being used to uniquely identify customers. Even in the workplace, wearable technology is seen as a productivity-boosting tool by younger workers. Expanding biometrics use to everyday banking and shopping transactions is will lead to an easier and faster way to do things.

This means that the future of money management is going to be a me-oriented change for the consumer and profit-oriented change for banks and businesses. Though there will still be a need for bank tellers, their numbers will be considerably reduced from the present level. This will reduce the cost of operations for businesses and banks alike.

For those who prefer a non-digital world when it comes to technology, paper money will still be around for the foreseeable future. One reason is its universal acceptance. Digital transactions may still be suspect to some degree, but paper is a tangible asset with which consumers will always be familiar.

On the subject of paper, the check has been dying out and is expected to completely disappear within a few years. The reason is obvious. For businesses and banks, handling checks costs money. For the individual consumer, checks are time consuming and difficult to manage. Banks have bumped up the cost of printing checks, in part to discourage their use. It is hard to make an argument for keeping checks as a way to handle money.

With all these coming changes, what will money actually mean to the average person when the majority of the time they will never actually see the paper which the numbers in their accounts represent? Images of stacks of money have been a historical representation of wealth. The coming changes will morph those stacks of money into stacks of ones and zeroes. It may be a sentimental perspective, but the idea of wealth appears to be changing along with the way money will be handled.

None of these changes are possible without the Internet, which makes online banking and microloans possible. In fact, the future of loans in general is said to rest with the Internet. Many people and businesses have found that skirting the paperwork nightmare that accompanies traditional loans from financial institutions can be done through Internet loan sites. P2P, or person to person, loans are increasing in popularity and avoid many of the high-interest payday loans that are still a resource to cash-strapped people who need a quick and easy loan.

The future of money management will be primarily digital and, optimistically, more secure. Your personal information and transactions will be connected to you as a person, rather than a signature or PIN code, through biometrics. It will not take days to see your money deposited in your bank account, but minutes, thanks to emerging financial technology. You will interact more with machines and devices than people. For those who are nostalgic, paper money will still be around.

Check books and loose change can be things of the past, and your money management will be orderly and summarized by your bank or retail store because of emerging technology. These changes will require some changes from us, but this is one of those situations in which the advantages heavily outweigh the yearning for the good old days.

With the advent of these new devices comes a wide range of management issues as IT departments struggle to keep up with new technology their users want. There is also the problem of finding an effective means of maintaining the security of these devices and the networks to which they connect on a daily basis. While it may seem impossible to truly exercise any type of measured control on mobile devices, there are several methods IT departments can use to keep track of the handhelds their employees use.

Create a Comprehensive Policy for Mobile Devices

Before you issue your first smartphone, take the time necessary to create a detailed company policy regarding all your mobile technology. Create a standards of use policy as part of this document that details exactly how the devices should be used and what can and cannot be installed. In addition to what can and can’t be installed on the device, spell out in detail how each device is to be cared for and take the time to specifically address any security issues surrounding each smartphone and tablet you issue. Having a comprehensive policy that each employee has read and understands is the first step to maintaining proper control of your equipment. It is especially important for your employees to understand your new policies.

Choose the Same Devices for All Satellite Employees

If your company issues smartphones and/or tablets to your employees, consider choosing the same types of devices for all your workers. While technology changes rapidly, it is still quite easy to choose one platform that fits the needs of your business and stick with it. Using one specific platform will simplify the setup process and allow you to select the apps that your employees will need to conduct business. This will make it easier for your IT departments to manage down the road when there are potentially hundreds of devices in circulation.

Require Passcodes on All Devices

Many users simply never take the time to create a passcode on their smartphones or tablets. However, for employees who travel, a lost phone could mean a big data breach down the road. Requiring a passcode on all your devices can help you maintain a better level of security in the unfortunate event that a smartphone is lost or stolen.

Maintain Accurate Records

Probably one of the most difficult items on this list, maintaining accurate records of each device with details about the hardware and to whom it was issued will make it much easier to track down later. Maintaining these records often proves to be the most difficult part of the process, however, as many IT technicians forget to enter it when the days get busy. To ensure the records are accurate, make these records a priority going forward and make them an integral part of the process when issuing a new smartphone or tablet.

Educate Your Employees

Most employees want to do a good job and have no desire to run afoul of any company policies. However, they need to be made aware of all the policies related to your business’ mobile equipment. This includes proper training on how to use the devices as well as maintaining the proper levels of security when using the devices. Consider making mobile education a regular part of continued education for all your workers so they understand how they are expected to use the devices and why you expect certain codes of conduct when using mobile technology.

Managing the ever-changing world of mobile tech can seem like a daunting task to even the most experienced IT experts at your company. However, with a little forethought, you can quickly gain control over your mobile devices to ensure that all your employees are using them correctly and securely according to the rules and regulations created for your business.

How to Determine Salaries for Your Employees http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/16/how-to-determine-salaries-for-your-employees/ http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/16/how-to-determine-salaries-for-your-employees/#comments Fri, 16 Jan 2015 16:00:00 +0000 http://www.afastnet.com/2015/01/16/how-to-determine-salaries-for-your-employees/ Once you have decided to open your business, more than likely you are going to need employees. No one can do everything ...]]> money-18554_640Once you have decided to open your business, more than likely you are going to need employees. No one can do everything themselves for very long. While going it alone might work in the very beginning, if you ever hope to expand you are going to need help. Before you make your first hire, you must carefully consider all aspects of salary and compensation so you can determine how you will reward your employees and how much you will pay them for the work they perform.

Salary Isn’t The Only Motivator

Before you begin to establish the parameters of your compensation strategy, you must remember that the best employees are motivated by much more than just how much they make. Growth opportunities, recognition and the ability to achieve also factor in an employee’s feeling of proper compensation. On top of that, you must also remember to consider what benefits you plan to offer as they will factor in to your overall payroll costs.

Establish Your Philosophy of Pay

Before you decide what to pay your first employees, take the time to consider what your philosophy of compensation really is. Do you prefer to offer a stronger benefits package and pay your employees a little less or would you prefer to cut back on benefits in order to provide larger salaries? Whatever you decide, this is a significant first step as it will guide the rest of your pay strategies across your entire business.

Find Out What Your Competition Pays

Compile a list of the positions in your company and create a detailed job description for each position. Once you have established the necessary positions, take a closer look at what your competition is paying for similar positions. While you don’t have to organise your pay exactly like your competitors, knowing their pay scales can give you a good starting point to build your pay structures.

Set Your Salary and/or Per-Hour Rates

Now that you have a good understanding of your benefits and what others are paying for the same type of work you can determine what your rates will be. While you don’t have to always pay more than the competitors, you will need to ensure that you set yourself apart from them in some way, whether its better benefits or a more flexible work environment. If you don’t, you may find your workers leaving for higher pay somewhere else.

Factor In Performance-Based Pay Options

Many businesses advocate performance-based pay and incentives by offering bonuses to employees for meeting yearly goals. While not necessarily mandatory, it can be a great way to inspire your employees to achieve in your company. If you do plan on offering performance based incentives, decide ahead of time how much these incentives will be and budget for them assuming all of your employees meet their goals – so you don’t run out of budget.

Determine Raise Policies

Once you have your base rates and performance incentives in place, you must also consider raises. Many employees expect yearly increases for a job well done in addition to standard bonus pay. You must continue to budget for these increments to keep pace with the economy and inflation. If you don’t you will find that your business will lose employees once they learn they are making less than when they started when the cost of living is factored into their salaries.

Determining the proper amount to pay your employees is a difficult task for any business owner. Following these basic steps will allow you as a business owner to determine the best payment policies which provide adequate and fair compensation to your employees. These crucial policies will help keep your staff working at your business while offering the balance and stability needed by a business in a fast-paced and ever-changing economy.

Businesses can, however, carefully plan social media strategies to help them increase the reach of their brand and grow faster. There are several factors that must be considered when creating a social media presence, all of which will govern what you do and how you respond. Careful consideration of these factors can help you make your business boom and earn a stellar reputation across all the social-media platforms.

Be Authentic

Never try to pretend your business is something it’s not. Be true and genuine with all your social media interactions. Social media users appreciate brutal honesty about companies and individuals who are true to themselves in person and through social media channels. Chances are they will see right through you if you aren’t authentic, and call you on it for all the world to see which can hurt your business far more than you might realize. However, if you are true to your company and brand and honest with your customers, social media users will lift you up and help carry your business farther than you might believe.

Sign Up Existing Customers

When building your social media presence, it is important to sign up existing customers to your social media pages. Provide easy methods for them to quickly share their experiences about your business and promote your new social media presence to your existing customers. Once they join your social media pages they can then easily share their experiences with your company to all of their friends. This act of sharing will greatly extend the reach of your brand as knowledge of your products and services shows up in the news feeds of people who haven’t heard of your company or considered giving you their business yet.

Be A Hit Brand

While it is important to always be open and honest about your company and brand on social media you don’t have to downplay your excitement. Even if you aren’t the biggest company in your field you can still act like it and project excitement and experience on your social media channels. Consumers want to shop at companies that are excited about what they do and are confident in the products and services they sell. Even if you aren’t moving a lot of product right now, act like you are and show the world why your brand is the best choice.

Measure Your Success

You cannot haphazardly dive into social media. Before you begin you must plan your strategy carefully and you must take steps to monitor your success. Track every detail about your social media efforts and employ social listening to monitor what other people are saying about your business or products. This way you can quickly engage users if there are problems and help guide your social media presence forward.

Building a successful social media campaign is important to the success of any modern business and is necessary if you hope to significantly grow your business and extend your reach to new customers. Be open and honest with all of your engagements with users on your social media sites, track the success of all your strategies and you will be on the right track to leveraging the power of social media to increase sales for your business.

One important part of any plan is identifying the critical audience which has the most to gain from whatever product or service you are bringing to the market. There are several steps you can take to make this process easier and help guarantee that you choose the best market to target when you are ready to release your new products.

Consult Your Business Plan

Before you even began to create that very first line of products or services, you slaved over a business plan for your startup. In this plan, you already did some of the research you need about your potential customers giving you a baseline from where you started. Look at the basic customer profile in your business plan and examine the goals you set in your initial plan to help you navigate and plan for the road ahead.

Do Extensive Research

Research is a big part of every aspect of business and is job that is never finished. Consult information about the industry in which you are operating and learn about your future consumers’ habits in those markets. If you have extra money in your budget consider adding consumer interviews and focus groups to your research endeavors to learn directly from potential customers what they expect and need. You can even gain early insights into what they think of your new products before you release them to the world.

Create a Customer Profile

This is more than a brief statement about your customer. For this you must seek out great details about your potential customers with data that include both demographic and psychographic information. You should search for external data about your potential buyers such as their age, gender, location, but also you need to understand your customer by learning their habits, hobbies and lifestyle.

Find Where Your Audience Is

It’s not enough to know who your audience is, you need to know where they are as well. Remember, just because you release this great new product doesn’t mean they will be able to find it. You have to bring it to them, and knowing how they interact with media and where they hang out will help you. For example, does your audience prefer a specific social media outlet over another? Do they use mobile apps more than others? What websites do they use? Details such as these will help point you in the right direction when it comes time to market your product to your audience.

Monitor and Evolve

The work doesn’t stop once you know who your target audience is and where you can find them. You have to continue monitoring the success of your marketing strategies and keep track of who is actually buying your product along the way. You may discover additional markets that expand your target audience, or you could even find that the audience your initial research point to isn’t interested at all. Keep a close eye on your successes and failures, and be prepared to adjust to the changing dynamics of the market.

Taking the necessary steps to discover your critical audience so you know how to target your marketing campaigns is a necessity if you want to reduce your chances of failure. Knowing who and where your critical audience is will give you great insight into how you should approach them to ensure a great first impression that could turn into a sale.

Countless individuals and companies offer services, all the way ...]]> man-404376_640There are lots of choices when it comes to designers for your website. Countless individuals and companies offer services, all the way from free to thousands of dollars. So which one is going to work for you? Some of these tools won’t deliver what you’re looking for, and some will. If you really need an update to your website, and you want a unique, flavorful website, then shelling out the money for a developer might be the way for you. However, choosing carefully is important.

There are several factors you should consider when searching for a developer for your site that will help you make the best decision for your business.

1. Are you willing to work remotely or locally?

Before you start interviewing web developers, you must first decide if you insist on working with someone locally that you can meet with face to face or if you’re willing to work with a firm remotely by phone and email. Willingness to work remotely will gain you access to a larger pool of developers, but not being able to meet one on one presents its own set of problems when trying to get the right look and feel for your site.

2. Decide on your budget.

Believe it or not developers charge a wide range of fees for creating your site. Often the larger firms will have the most talent but charge far more than smaller development companies. Before you start talking to various developers, decide on what your budget will be for and use that as a guide when looking at the fees charged by developers.

3. Have an idea about your site.

Developers will need guidance on what you are looking for on your site so they know how to proceed. Formulate a basic plan for how you want it to look and feel and what content you want so that you can get a more accurate description of the costs of development.

4. Examine developers’ portfolios.

All seasoned web developers will be able to easily list a variety of sites they have created for other clients with their addresses. Take the time to visit each site and evaluate them based on their content and design. Make a list of your favorites and narrow your list of developers based on sites you loved or even hated.

5. Gauge their interest.

A web developer that is truly interested in working with you will want to know more about your business. Yes, they will spend time talking about their accomplishments and websites, but the developer that focuses the meeting on your business is the one you want working for you. Developers that take the time to learn about your business ahead of time will probably be more prepared to design a site that suits the needs of your business.

6. Learn about their services.

Some developers offer a variety of services on top of the initial development that could be advantageous to your business. For instance, some companies will host the site for you and handle all of the aspects of bringing your site online. Others will provide regular updates for you which can add excellent value to the cost of the website.

Choosing the right web developer can be a daunting experience especially if you don’t have much expertise in web design yourself. However, choosing the right web designer can be simplified if you examine what they have done in the past and you listen carefully when they describe how they can help you. Whatever you do, don’t design the website for your business for yourself unless you have the experience needed to create a website that is both professional looking and informative. You could end up with a website will actually hurt your reputation instead of help it.

The service will reportedly look and feel almost exactly like the current interface of Facebook, only it will be designed for users to chat and collaborate on projects at the office.

Currently, the company is testing the new service and is expected to continue its testing for a few months before releasing it to the public. The goal of the project is to keep all the services in the Facebook website while maintaining enough separation between Facebook at Work and traditional Facebook services so that users feel comfortable that their personal lives won’t spill over into their work lives.

Online Collaboration Is Key

While most companies have been slow to utilize many of the new online collaboration tools already provided by Facebook’s competitors, it is hard to deny that the future is here, and companies must adapt by using these tools as employees continue to expand when and where they work. The traditional nine to five model is dying and employees are working more and more from home at odd hours as they strive for improved balance in both their work and home life. Facebook is seeking to cash in on these changing environments by providing a tool for employees to use to collaborate with their office colleague from virtually anywhere while also enabling them to quickly access their personal profiles as well.

Facebook Leverages Users

With 1.35 billion users accessing the site each month, Facebook has the ability to leverage these numbers to create one of the first truly successful social media for work sites. Currently, many users of the service already use Facebook as a way of collaborating and chatting with co-workers about projects, and while there are other tools designed for business such as LinkedIn, most of these services don’t offer the collaboration features necessary for complicated projects, and they also lack the chat features needed for real time discussions on the job.

Change Of Perception

When Facebook does finally release its new Facebook at Work service, it will represent a fundamental change in how it is perceived by not only users but other tech companies as well. The new services for business users will put Facebook in direct competition with tech giants such as Microsoft, Google and even IBM that already offer their services and tools for online collaboration tailored specifically for business users.

As the way we work continues to evolve and we move away from the traditional work day, new tools that allow employees to accomplish their goals must be adopted to ensure that business still operates as usual even if someone isn’t in the office. Facebook at Work represents one of the first steps that a business can take that will allow all of its users to easily adopt a more mobile way of working, with the ability to collaborate and chat with employees at all hours of the day from virtually anywhere.
With its familiar interface and large user base, Facebook is prepared to challenge other collaboration software creators and create one system where users can track both their business and personal lives.

The update was hailed for emphasizing a more unified experience across multiple devices and its added security that creates one experience for users across multiple devices that is said to be safe and secure no matter where you are. However, feedback from early adopters has been less than stellar, with many users reporting a wide variety of bugs that hamper its usability and raise questions about its security.

Device Sluggishness and Battery Life

Smartphone users can easily become obsessive over the battery life of their devices and will quickly notice any change to its normal operation. Users of Lollipop have noticed a significant increase in battery usage on a wide range of devices. On top of the increase in battery usage, many users have also noticed a significant decrease in performance on their devices, making using their smartphones almost painful.

Network and Email Problems

It seems Google may have forgotten that Wi-Fi should run smoothly before releasing an operating system. Many users have reported problems making connections to their Wi-Fi networks and when they do, they’ve experienced slower than normal download speeds. While you can normally work around this flaw if you have a smartphone, many tablet owners’ only connection to the outside world is through Wi-Fi and if they encounter this bug their tablets could quickly become useless.

For users that still have Wi-Fi, many have reported problems with their email. Email simply won’t download or is very slow to load making it almost impossible to check email on the go.

App Problems

Some app problems are always expected in major system releases. However, there have been so many reports of apps simply not working since the update that they have become too numerous to count. Apps ranging from third party productivity apps to games and even many of the default apps that come with the operating system are simply not working on a variety of devices.

Users Frustrated

While most early adopters are relatively understanding of bugs in newly released software, there have been so many problems with this release that many users have become frustrated with Google and are regretting updating in the first place. This update was supposed to represent a meaningful advancement in the evolution of Android, but many users have reported being thoroughly unimpressed with it, as it has negatively impacted their productivity when using their smartphones or tablets.

The first devices to feature Android 5.0 Lollipop are the Nexus 9 tablets, Nexus 6 “phablet” phone and Player, with Google planning to roll out the update across all its devices in stages to the Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 and Google Play edition devices. Before Google makes its final plans for the roll out of Lollipop, it must refocus its efforts on eliminating these bugs and ironing out this initial release. Time is of the essence for the tech giant,as there are limits to the patience of even the early adopters.

While this is no doubt a large step forward for the Android operating system, Google must work fast to ensure they don’t take two steps back by allowing these bugs to continue and damaging the reputation of one of the most popular mobile operating systems in the world.
